“Blessed are those who live with humility, mercy, and a pure heart, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
John Richard “Dick” Marshall, lovingly known as “Papa,” was born on February 17, 1937, and passed away on November 29, 2025, peacefully at home. He grew up in Jerome and graduated from Jerome High School in 1955. During his senior year, Dick met the love of his life, Louise Rice. They were married on August 26, 1956, at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church and shared 66 beautiful years together.
Dick attended and graduated from the University of Notre Dame before returning with Louise to Jerome, where he joined the family farming operation alongside his father, Charlie Marshall, and his brothers. A dedicated farmer at heart, Dick poured his life into the land and took great joy in teaching his children and grandchildren the value of hard work and stewardship.
A lifelong member of St. Jerome’s Catholic Parish, Dick’s humble and unwavering faith formed the foundation of his life and his family. He taught his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the power of prayer, the importance of loving one’s neighbor, and the quiet strength of living the Beatitudes each day.
Dick’s farming legacy stretched across five generations: from his grandfather, Joe Marshall, to his father, Charlie, to his sons, Steven and DeWitt Marshall, and now to his grandson, Ben Marshall.
Dick was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Marjorie Marshall; his brother, Jim; and his beloved wife, Louise, with whom he shared more than six decades of marriage.
His memory lives on through his children: Steven (Mary) Marshall, DeWitt (Becky) Marshall, Mary Brown, and Marjorie (Scott) Smith; his 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of St. Luke's, Vision Hospice, and his devoted family care team who walked with him over the past three years, especially his granddaughter, Emily, her family Aaron, Sophia and James; his grandson, Ben, and his family Sam, Eli and Max for blessing him with weekly family dinners that meant so much to him.
