Lillian Mae Smallwood

Lillian Mae Smallwood, of Jerome, Idaho, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026, at the age of 95. She was born on January 15, 1931, in Buhl, Idaho, and lived a long life marked by devotion to her family, quiet strength, and enduring care for those she loved.

Lillian graduated from Castleford High School and went on to build a life centered on family and home. On September 25, 1952, she married James Smallwood, beginning a marriage that would remain an important part of her life and story. She found joy in simple and beautiful things, especially gardening and anything related to the moon and stars. Those interests reflected a gentle spirit and an appreciation for both the beauty close at hand and the wonder beyond it.

One of the clearest expressions of Lillian’s loving nature was the care she gave to her father. After his car wreck, she became his main caregiver, faithfully caring for him from 1982 until 1998. That long season of devotion spoke deeply of her compassion, patience, and steadfast commitment to family.

Lillian will be lovingly remembered by her children, Cheryl (Coy) Bryson, Jim Smallwood, and Karen (Vernie) Blackmon, and by her one and only grandson, Ben Blackmon. She held an important place in the lives of those who knew and loved her, and her memory will remain close to their hearts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Smallwood; her son, Randy Smallwood; her father, Aaron Gonterman; her mother, Elnora Gonterman; her brothers, Floyd Gonterman and Lyle Gonterman; and her sisters, Carol Schwans and Vonda Helsley.

Lillian’s life was one of faithfulness, care, and enduring love. She leaves behind a legacy of tenderness and strength that will continue to be remembered by her family for years to come.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 11am, Friday, September 25, 2026 at Jerome Cemetery, Jerome.
