Nancy Carolyn Niccum Turley passed away on August 5, 2025, in Provo, Utah, at the age of 84.
Nancy was the first child of William Howard Niccum and Faye Thomason Niccum, born at her uncle’s home east of Jerome, Idaho, on January 13, 1941. She grew up on the family farm in the community of Orchard Valley near Wendell, Idaho, and attended Orchard Valley School and Wendell High School.
Nancy married and raised three children, living in Canyon Country, CA; Appleton, WI; and Woodstock, GA. She was active in church and community roles wherever she made her home. In Canyon Country she served as Stake Relief Society President, Stake Primary President, fostered Indian students, served in the PTA and managed her own print shop, The Copier. She started genealogy research soon after marrying and pursued it throughout her life.
In 1978 the family moved to Wisconsin. She came to love the people and the harsh winters there, cross-country skiing, walking in the cold, and even ice skating. She took leadership roles in the Young Women’s group and Relief Society. She supported her children in sports, volunteered as a pink lady, chaired the monthly blood pressure clinic, and served as secretary of the hospital auxiliary board.
In Woodstock, Georgia, she served 12 years as Stake Relief Society President, outlasting three Stake Presidents. She started as a cashier at Morgan’s Hardware and became head bookkeeper, working there for 16 years. In 2000 she married Felton Turley and moved to his home in Hiram, Georgia.
She enjoyed gardening, the wildlife and the open spaces of the property. She made many close friends in the community and participated in the forming of the Paulding County Literacy Council and the creation of PAULDING READS!, an adult tutoring effort, becoming chair of the Council in 2011. An avid reader, she always had a book by her side to fill any quiet moments.
After Felton’s death in 2012, Nancy returned to the family farm in Idaho. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2006 and upon arriving in Idaho, she founded and led the Magic Valley Parkinson’s Group. She made the meetings fun and educational and an enjoyable place to share symptoms and solutions. In 2021 she lived with her daughter in Utah and more recently at a care facility in Provo, UT.
Nancy made an impact wherever she resided and was loved by many.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Donna and John Rios, Douglas and Christine Mecham, Marjorie and Garry Lopshire; and stepson Lanier and Shari Turley of Hiram, GA; 16 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and sister and brother-in-law, Judy and John Johnson of Wendell, ID.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Felton Turley; and sister Lela Niccum.
Funeral Service for Nancy will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wendell, Idaho. A private family burial will take place at the Wendell Cemetery.
