Roy Erich Hubert passed away peacefully at home in Dietrich, Idaho, on July 23, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded by family. He battled ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), but was blessed to only have to endure its effects for a few months, rather than years.
Roy was born on October 31, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Erich Otto Hubert and Ella Marie Maykus Hubert. Roy was very proud of his German heritage, and also proud to be a first generation American. When he was 7 years old, his father purchased a small farm in Dietrich, Idaho, and moved his family there from Salt Lake. Roy attended school and graduated from Dietrich High School. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from 1957 to 1959 in Germany. When he returned home, he soon met the love of his life, Nedra Jean Burgoyne, and dated her for 2 years, waiting for her to grow up so he could marry her. They were married on November 17, 1961 in the Salt Lake City Temple and made their home just a mile away from his family’s farm in Dietrich. They were blessed with 7 children: Shauna (Jarrett) Porter, Dietrich, ID; Shellie Jacks, Layton, Utah; Devan (Kris) Hubert, Dietrich ID; Derik (Cary) Hubert, Middleton, ID; Natalie (Craig) Christiansen, Dietrich, ID; Heather (Mike) Torgerson, Dietrich, ID; and JoLyn (Jeremy) Churchill, Dietrich, ID.
Roy was a hard worker and could fix just about anything. He single-handedly built a 50 x 100-foot chicken coop and raised thousands of chickens for Bertie’s processing plant in Twin Falls, Idaho. He also worked for First Security Bank in Shoshone, Idaho, starting as a bookkeeper and working his way up to branch manager and eventually Vice President of the corporation. Later, Roy left the chicken business and bought dairy cows. With the help of his family, he milked cows – not only for the income, but to teach his children the value of hard work and to take responsibility well.
He served twice as president of both the Shoshone Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. He also served as president of the Lincoln County Cemetery Board for 9 years, and was a Lincoln County Commissioner for 11 years. In addition, he sat on the Southern Idaho Solid Waste Board of Directors and the South Central Health District Board of Directors, each for 10 years. He greatly valued the relationships he formed through each of these roles.
Roy was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served faithfully in many roles, including Bishop, Scoutmaster, High Councilor in the Blaine Stake, Stake President of the Carey Stake, and temple worker in the Boise and Twin Falls temples. He and his wife served a mission in Oklahoma for 18 months, followed by a yearlong service mission.
He was always busy, and found joy in hard work. He took great pride in keeping his farm and equipment looking nice – including repainting his blue Ford tractor (and the surrounding trees and such where he would lean the parts to spray them) numerous times. He especially loved spending time with his family - camping, playing games with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events, telling stories, and just gathering with them for any occasion.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Nedra; their seven children (mentioned above); 30 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Richard, of Pleasant Grove, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Wilford and Hans (Johnnie), and his sister, Trudy Stimpson.
He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
A Viewing will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Thursday, July 31, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 160 South 660 East, Dietrich, Idaho. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, August 1, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints, 160 South 660 East, Dietrich, Idaho with a viewing beginning one hour prior. Services will conclude at the Dietrich Cemetery.
